Surfing Sci-Fi: 666 Park Avenue and the Scooby Doo Effect

I grew up watching copious amounts of the old 1970s and 80s Scooby Doo cartoons. In fact, by the time I was around five, I had decided that I wanted to marry Shaggy, and that he, Velma, and Scooby Doo should ditch Freddy and Daphne and come be my friends instead. Having such an affinity for these characters and shows since such a young age, I can’t help but find myself noticing similarities between Scooby Doo and the new ABC television show 666 Park Avenue.

Video Game Review: RO Violet

Ever since a few years ago, when I traded my old PC desktop for an iMac (and later sold that and bought a MacBook Pro), I have more or less given up on MMORPGs. However, every once in a while, I get a twinge to play Ragnarok Online – a Korean MMO filled with the most adorable characters and monsters in any game I have ever played.

Movie Review: Coriolanus

The Shakespeare adaptation set in non-Shakespearean times has become more the rule than the exception. It’s only a matter of time before somebody films a production of Merry Wives of Windsor set on Mars.

Book Review: The Happiness Equation

I recently met David Burgett at Con X and was really impressed. Normally if I am impressed by the author, then I will seek out their stuff. In Burgett’s case, I was as impressed with the concepts and premises of his books as I was with him.

Movie Review: The Shrine

I have a Halloween tradition, one that I have now dragged my wife into, of sitting down on Halloween night while trick-or-treaters tramp by outside and watching an ostensibly scary movie that I’ve never seen before.

Comics Review: Bigfoot - Sword of the Earthman

This is a smart, wild fusion mash-up of several genres/stories that has the legs (or feet) to go the distance! This comic is one of those cases of using so many well known tropes and nods to series such as John Carter, Penn and Teller, and Predator, that the combination of the familiar becomes unique.

Opinion: When Geeks Took Over the Election

On Tuesday, November 6, Americans went to the polls and voted for a new President, members of congress, and other offices. The headline the next day was that President Obama had won re-election by a decent margin, gathering over 330 electoral college votes to the challenger Mitt Romney’s 209. There was a lot of talk on…
